Silhouettes Anyone? Make Your Own Family Portraits

by Joan Robinett Wilson on May 31, 2011

The Coco

A couple of years ago in a decorating magazine I saw a wall of silhouette portraits of the homeowner’s family, dog and all.  I liked it a lot, so I attempted to recreate it with my kids (I am still working on our dog, cat and turtle silhouettes).  It’s a very easy project, obviously, since I could do it….Here’s what I did:

  1. Take a picture of the person in profile against a light background.  Fill up the screen as much as possible.

photo the silhouette is cut from
  2. I wanted my silhouettes as large as I could do at home, so I printed them out as large as possible to fill up a piece of 8 1/2 x11 copy paper.  If you want something smaller, size accordingly.
  3. Decide what color you want the silhouette to be – I chose traditional black.  Tape your 8 1/2×11 photo copy onto the paper you want your silhouette on and cut it/xacto it out.
  4. Figure out your frame. I chose frames to fit the maximum size silhouette I could fit on 8 1/2 x 11 paper. One of my frames is a plastic mirror frame that had a broken mirror and the other two are garage sales finds.  I spray painted them all red.
  5. Adhesive your silhouette to a background in the frame – I just used newspaper.
  6. There you have.  The amazing thing is my silhouettes actually look like my children.

Snohomish, WA is where you’ll find me, architect mom, ”drafting a life”; working from home as an architect, managing my family’s lives, forgetting to clean the house, building some crazy thing or another, sometimes cooking a great meal and always packing my kids horrible lunches.
