Unfortunately, my clients, the “O” family had to look at their not so attractive seventies style house every day. Wonderful people, with a wonderful sense of style they had already extensively updated the interior, but now they needed to add on and wanted a new look for their family home.
Remodels are always a challenge and this one was particularly tricky with the sloping site and the main entrance which needed to remain where it was on the upper level. I was helped out in that the grade level garage was converted to an office, but then we did have to figure out how to get down there from the upper floor. We came up with a plan that called for stick framing over the existing roof to get a larger pitch roof which would match the new addition which would have a second floor within its roof. The house now has a contemporary craftsman look. The ‘O”‘s did a fantastic job landscaping to get up to the upper level entry. Also, note the use of welded wire fabric (a product used to reinforce concrete) in the railing which cut costs, yet helped give the house a more modern edge. I like that the square pattern of the welded wire fabric mimics the house shape and many of the windows. I think CFA Voysey would be happy with the result.
